Bridal Hairstyle – Hippie

image

I’ve had a few brides asking for the hippie look with loose soft curls ala Nicole Richie.

It is an informal look, so if you’re going for the elegant look, this is not for you.

Nearly everyone can carry off this hairstyle and this hairstyle is especially great for brides who are insecure about their face shapes and want to hide their jawlines, round faces etc.

Bear in mind, for Asian brides who typically have black or very dark hair: this hairstyle look best when your hair colour is light, so you may want to lighten your hair colour before your big day.

Bridal Makeup – Elizabeth

The beautiful beautiful Liz was an absolute dream to work on. It was great to be her wedding makeup artist as she was also very easy to work with.

Huge gorgeous eyes, smooth skin (although with uneven skin tone), prominent features.

For Indian and Punjabi temple ceremony we typically recommend a lip colour that is few shades darker than the one you usually use. Doesn’t the lip colour look great on her?

A tip for brides to be:- buy your own lip colour for ease of touch up during the day and night. You get to save money without having to pay for your wedding makeup artist to be around for touch ups.

Foundation: Graftobian
Eyelashes: H4

Professional photos to follow soon.

Makeup Trend 2011

image

Strong lips are in. Colours shown in image from YSL cosmetics.

Important when wearing strong lip colours
- use a lip brush to apply lip colour for a more even application.
- blot off with tissue and reapply (this is called layering) for a longer lasting colour.
- make sure lip shape is even, balanced on the left and right side.
- use lipliner for a clean and defined look.
- keep eyes tame.

Or if you’re too lazy and can’t be bothered with all the details, just unscrew your lipstick and swipe it on :)

Go ahead and try out all the colours that you’ve never used. This is honestly one of the easiest trend in makeup, lucky everybody.

Pink mohawk

image

image

Oooo doesn’t his hair look awesome?

How many would have the guts to do a mohawk, let alone a pink mohawk?

Reminds me of Gianni, a character from After Juliet, a very memorable stage production I worked on, directed by Kelvin Wong. Gianni had a red mohawk, a really high red mohawk.

It was really interesting working for that production. I had to design makeup, hair and costume with punk and goth element. They all turned out really well. :) Will post up some pics in the near future.

Crossdressing / cross dressers’ party

image

image

Her name is Faith. Post transformation.

Pre transformation, his name is Kelvin. Kelvin is an extremely talented director that I’ve worked with for many years, and it is because of him, that I even managed to win the Boh Cameronian Arts Award.

This was a makeup work done to transform him for a crossdressing party held in KL Performing Arts Centre, in conjunction with a ‘transvestite interpretation’ of Waiting For Godot, directed by Kimmy Kiew.

It was fun to do Faith up, ‘she’ was already gorgeous to begin with. Although not visible from photos, his facial features were soften using makeup products to appear more feminine. Also, a wig was added to add on to the styling. A suitable wig is a must!!

Reducing Shine on Face

image

What to do when your face refuse to stop producing oil, and hence shine?

Did an infomercial shoot for Astro PVR, with MY FM deejay Jack Lim (林德容), and boy, was it a tiring shoot. In addition to having only 2 hours of sleep the night before, we had to shoot without airconditioning or fan, to not have distracting background noise in the recording.

And man, the talents were sweating and their faces were so shiny! We shot in High Definition, and in HDTV, the tiniest shine or sweat drops would show.

To help slow down sweat and mattify the shine on talent’s face, I used this awesome Japanese makeup base, Sana Pore Putty. I got it from Singapore Sasa, but I think it’s available in your local Sasa.

You can use it prior to applying the foundation, but I chose to apply it ON TOP on the foundation and powder.

Why on top of the foundation and not below? Well, I’ve experienced foundation shifting under the said makeup base, and the foundation just refused to set. That made the talent (from another shoot) looked as if he was wearing a mask.

So now I just apply foundation on the talent, powder him/her up, and apply a thin layer of Sana Pore Putty on the T zone, the area that is most likely to get shiny. For faces that produce more oil, I apply a thin later all over.

RESULT:-  nice matte face with natural skin halation (just a nice glow so skin doesn’t look dead)

Be careful, use only a thin layer. Using too much would create a flat and lifeless skin.

And that worked for the Astro PVR shoot. I had to touch up the talents (7 of them) less often. This really is a useful product, that should be carried by all makeup artists, and consumers who shines easily. A similar product is Dr Feel Good from Benefit.

Hygienic or not?

image

Hubby and I went for foot massage at this reflexology place near our house. He was too lazy to trim his own toenails, so he got the guy to do the full work, removing cuticles, and other dirty stuff from his feet.

It wasn’t cheap! These people charge by hour, and hubby had to pay RM 50, for one whole hour of trimming God knows what.

I was seriously questioning the hygiene of his set of tools. I didn’t see him clean them, nor did I see any alcohol spray for disinfecting.

I’m never letting hubby do it again.

Also this has inspired me to come up with some value added service to bridal clients. Will announce soon.

Bruno

Yes, I actually know a Bruno in real life. Two actually, the other one was my friend’s furry friend. :p Anyways..

This Bruno is a model from Brazil.

This was a shoot to update Bruno’s portfolio. In Malaysia, Bruno is represented by ML Models.

I especially liked the photo where Bruno is dressed in all white. It has a very modern John Travolta feel to it. Very clean makeup look to go with the simple styling.

In the first photo, we went for the Adam Lambert dark look, so his eyelids, both top and bottom were smeared with lots of eyeliner, topped with black eyeshadow.

Oh, I also got to slather oil all over him haha ;p

Omg

image

Oh my God, super massive happy!!! Was called up to do a shoot for Nando’s!! Nando’s is only like my favourite food in the world. Attempted to make it at home few weeks back, but sad to say that it didn’t turn out like Nando’s from the shop. Sadness.

Anyhow, I was requested to transform an Asian man into an African man. The previous makeup artist did not have the appropriate foundation colour, so she/he mixed eyeliner into foundation. The talent had a crazy hard time removing the makeup. He said his wife had to use an entire new bottle of Bobbi Brown Cleansing Oil. Which he has to replace. ha ha

I’m so glad I have my Graftobian foundation palette that has colours ranging from Caucasian skintone to African skintone. Even then I had to mix some black from Make Up For Ever Flash palette to darken it even more.

Removing it was relatively easy for the talent. Firstly, we used Eucerin cleansing milk, write off with tissue, and the remove residue with Simple Cleansing Wipe.

This method of transformation was okay for indoor shoots, but for outdoor events, it will be necessary to use airbrush makeup.

I love Nando’s!!!

Tiaras for weddings?

image

The beautiful bride and her pretty maid of honour :)

Are you the kind of bride who’s always wanted to wear a tiara? Or maybe you’ve always dreamt of being the beautiful princess at your own wedding?

Do take into consideration that the bigger tiara is, the heavier it is, and the more difficult it is to balance it on your head. We’ll definitely recommend an updo to secure the tiara to your head and hair.

If you’ve decided to wear a tiara at your wedding, be sure to secure it well, and also practice walking around with it before your wedding functions, so you can get used to it and behave naturally during your big day.

Also, the general rule of thumb is that the size of the tiara should be proportionate to the size of your head. The bigger the size of size of your head, the bigger tiara it is that you can wear. If you have a small head, wear a smaller one so it won’t look like you stole somebody elses’ tiara.

The bride asked me, “Macam mana? Macam Cinderella tak?” translated to “So what do you think? Do I look like Cinderella or not?”

Yes, you do :)

Bridal Makeup – Charlotte

image

This is Charlotte, a beautiful young bride, also sister of one of my very good friend. :)

Being a young bride, Charlotte wanted to go for the classic look, but didn’t want to look older than her age, so we decided to let her hair down, instead of putting them all up in an updo. Her hair deco is self made, how pretty!

Charlotte had dry skin, so we first had to prep her face with moisturiser n eyecream. We also added on some makeup base to ensure that the makeup will last the whole day as she will have a photoshoot after her church wedding in the morning, and I wouldn’t be there to help her touch up.

For her eyes, we decided to go with a medium intense version of smokey eyes, with semi dramatic false lashes. This is to make her look more awake, plus wearing false lashes ALWAYS make you look better in photos. :)

I always encourage my bridal clients to wear false eyelashes to enhance their beauty in photos. For brides who are concerned that wearing false lashes may be uncomfortable, please don’t be, because false eyelashes are never uncomfortable when applied on properly. Yes, you may feel as if there are a set of awning on your eyelids, but after the first 15 mins or so, you would have gotten used to it. Try them on during your bridal trial so that you get more time to get used to it. I guarantee it’s worth it. :)

Will post up photos from the professional photographer soon.

Wishing Charlotte and Simon all the best on their new exciting journey ahead. God bless.

Bridal Makeup – Syazwani

image

Long time no update, been really busy with stuff, I really should make it a habit to update more often. Well, with my Android phone plus WordPress application, I don’t see why not. :)

So a short update, this is Syaz from last week’s wedding gig. Syaz had huge beautiful eyes, and absolutely to die for skin, so we only had to use very little makeup. Personally, I don’t fancy thick makeup for actual day of your wedding, as you’ll be surrounded by people and you don’t want them to see your makeup melting in the heat. I try to get away with using as little makeup as possible for actual wedding day.

One thing though, due to religious reasons we did not trim her eyebrows, so it may look a bit thick, but I’m not really an advocate of super thin eyebrows.

Here’s a picture from my phone, please bear with it, it ain’t no professional camera. :) will post one from the professional photographer soon.

Doesn’t she look like a doll? Actually I think she looks very goddess like, in Buddhist religion there’s one called Goddess of Mercy, aka Kuan Yin.

Had a really terrible case of acute tonsillitis and had to be admitted to DSH for IV antibiotics. Had to miss and postpone a few jobs because of this unexpected misfortune.

My apologies for the inconvenience to those clients affected.

The No Makeup Look – 2010 Trend

Jessica Simpson goes with minimal makeup on Marie Claire, Dakota Fanning, Gwyneth Paltrow and various other stars are showing their bare faces at red carpet events. Ok maybe calling it bare faces is a bit of a stretch, but wow, this is such a change!

I should be so lucky as I’m utterly lazy when it comes to putting makeup on myself. But really, I don’t wanna be associated with Katie Holmes in this aspect ;P

Really looking forward to incorporate this no makeup look into my next theater production, After Juliet, at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Center in July 2010. I think the girls will all go without makeup, whilst the guys will all wear eyeliner ala Adam Lambert.

A reverse, aye?

To create the no makeup look:-

1. Use very little foundation or concealer just to cover uneven skintone.

2. Line eyes with gray or brown pencil liner & apply mascara.

2. A little bit of blusher, preferably cream blush, eg. Stila Convertible Colour.

3. Put on a bit of lipgloss.

Tada! Quite a bit of makeup for a no makeup look, isn’t it? The trick is to use a little as possible! Go light handed.

Punjabi Wedding: Malinder

I love Punjabi weddings. They are always so colourful, don’t you think?

In 2009 I moved into my new house and promptly after that was engaged as a makeup artist for my neighbour, Malinder’s wedding. She is a beautiful woman with sharp features, so all I needed to do was enhance her best feature; her eyes and her skin. :)

Look how colourful everything is!

Alert: Banned Skincare in Malaysia

Skincare and makeup products always go hand in hand, regardless of whether they are applied personally or by  professional makeup artists. I always use a basic moisturiser to prepare the face for makeup. Kiehl’s is my favourite!

But be careful of what you put on your face, especially whitening products! The Malaysian Health Ministry has just banned 3 skincare products as they contain tretinoin and hydroquinone, two active ingredient in whitening products. All 3 banned products are LOCALLY MADE.

In laymen terms:-

  1. The two ingredient work by preventing your skin from getting darker
  2. But the process of getting darker itself is a safety precaution against skin cancer
  3. So since you’re no longer able to get darker, you cannot protect yourself.
  4. You expose yourself to higher chance of getting cancer.

Be safe now, and don’t forget to read your labels!

Colgate Sensitive Pro Toothpaste TVC

The Colgate Sensitive Pro toothpaste TV commercial that we worked on last month is finally shown on TV. Thanks Irene for the update! :)

It was some hot and humid day, so we had to constantly retouch their makeup and hairdo, and to reapply a fresh layer after lunch. Despite the weather and the hours we had to endure the weather, it was really nice working with the Filipinos as they were REALLY warm and friendly.

Here is a memento of their good times in Malaysia. The TV commercial called for natural looking makeup and hair, so it was just a matter of accentuating facial features and to conceal imperfections.
